8/8/2023 0 Comments Midwife schooling![]() ![]() The program objectives focus on the following components of midwifery care: professional responsibilities, midwifery management process, primary care, sexual and reproductive health care, pregnancy, birth, postpartum, and lactation care and care of the newborn. The Midwifery Program prepares clinical midwives at the doctoral level (DNP) by providing an education in health science theory and clinical preparation focusing on the attainment of knowledge, judgment and skills relevant to the provision of primary and full-scope reproductive health care and incorporating appropriate use of consultation, collaborative management, or referral. Graduates are also eligible to register with New York State as a licensed midwife.Ĭolumbia Nursing's Midwifery Program is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education (ACME). View the list of clinical sites.Īfter completing this full-time program over six semesters, graduates are eligible to take the national certifying examination administered by the American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB) to become a Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM). Students learn to provide independent care for healthy individuals and collaborative care for those with medical and/or obstetrical complications. Intensive clinical experience is provided in a variety of ambulatory and inpatient settings exposing students to diverse patient populations and practice options. Academic and clinical courses support student development of the knowledge, philosophy and practice of midwifery during pregnancy, childbirth and newborn periods as well as sexual and reproductive health care across the lifespan.
